free email

Luckily, getting a free email address is really simple now. There are heaps of free web-based email services such as hotmail, fortunecity etc, but my preferred one is yahoo. It has a pager system as well, which notifies you when you have new email. You can also read your external "real" email from the yahoo interface, which is really handy, or you can forward it automatically to your other (main) email address.

Web-based email has some other advantages over server-based email. You can read it from anywhere that you can get on the net, and you get a chance to look at the email & its attachments in an Inbox before deciding whether or not to download it. If it's Spam, or looks a bit suspicious in some way, you can delete it without it getting within coo-ee of your hard-drive. No waiting for ten minutes to download your email & then realising someone ELSE has sent you that cursed virus-ridden frog-in-a-blender. Ditch it straight from yahoo's server. (Incidentally, I advise NEVER opening attachments in formats such as .exe that can contain viruses).

Go to yahoo.com and get yourself a shiny new yahoo email address.

If you don't have virus protection software, now's the time to get it. I used to use Norton but it came up for renewal once when I was penniless, and so I was forced to look around for something free. I've been using the free version of AVG from www.grisoft.com for about a year now and love it. It updates as often as any expensive virus protection software, and I've had no problems through recent record-breaking virus outbreaks where I've been sent viruses hundreds of time in a day. Thanks Grisoft!

While you're at it, you might like to get something to remove "spyware" from your computer too, to protect yourself from spammers and other collectors of data you haven't consented to. There's a good free one called AdAware available from www.lavasoft.de

Now you have an email address for your site, you need webspace to put your site in.
