Most of my previous actual
employment has been financial, managerial and research-based, but then I left
the Public Service and have since been self-employed. I've been building websites
for about five years while exhibiting as an artist and studying multimedia, film
and video production. I
prefer to work on informational and/or entertainment sites rather than pure e-commerce
sites, as interactivity and efficient provision of information are the aspects
of the web about which I am most passionate. My vision for the future of the web
is one of access for all, and I am committed to being as inclusive as possible.
I most enjoy work where I can use this commitment to best effect, working on sites
that are as entertaining and easy-to-use for a newbie as for a web-veteran. Usability
is the single most important factor in web design to me, although as an artist
I'm also very aware of visual impact and I firmly believe that a site doesn't
have to look boring in order to be highly functional. See folio at: retrokat.com. In
addition to making sites of my own, I also enjoy passing on the knowledge I've
learned. I've recently been focussing on training and assessing website usability.
After providing
on-the-job training for many years in the Public Service, I have recently gained
training and assessment qualifications. This has given me greater understanding
of the processes and requirements of providing formal accredited training, which
is reflected in the development of my own lesson plans and assessment tools. I've
also been undertaking social research, particularly in relation to equity issues
on the web. My background as a government Jobcentre Manager in a small rural town
has made me acutely aware of the skills-gap between rural and urban communities,
and the social impact that can have. I am keen to share the opportunities that
technology has given me with others. See: workwest.net. -

I
have optimism and energy. By the bucketload. My
strong ability to communicate both verbally and in writing has been consistently
affirmed by my referees.
I am a creative and lateral thinker, and therefore very good at resolving problems.
I pick things
up easily, and so I adapt to new jobs more quickly than many people. I
have a very high level of commitment, and am happy to work long hours if I'm doing
work I love (such as the web). I
have received a very high level of recognition from management at all stages of
my career, and my previous employers have all said that they would be happy to
re-employ me. I
empathise with a wide range of people, and make people feel at ease. I believe
that this is largely because I recognise and admire people's talents, and have
a genuine interest in encouraging them to develop those talents.
I have a quick sense of humour, and like to have fun with whatever I’m doing. I
am particularly interested in working with children, and keen to encourage early
development of computer skills. |
