When I turn on my TV, I expect it to work properly. Otherwise, I need a new TV. When I log onto the web, however, I can't have that same expectation. Of course, there are a lot of factors at play with the web, but the major problem is that web technology is advancing at a far greater rate than the population can be expected to keep up with.

Web designers want to be cutting-edge. They want to use the latest WOW-worthy techniques to have the maximum impact on viewers. OK, that's understandable, and they can convince a business that having a high-tech site is the way to go. I'm here to put forward the case AGAINST.

Sure, if you're selling a high-end product and want to limit your audience as a marketing strategy, then go ahead and let your web designer use every possible Plug-In and browser-enhancement. You won't mind losing the less savvy web-users, or those who haven't upgraded their computer for a couple of years.

What I want to do here is give a bit of advice to the other end of the spectrum - small businesses who want a web-presence, and want the site to work for everyone. Businesses who want to communicate directly and effectively with their customers and potential customers. People who want WEBSITES THAT WORK. For all.

You can see my full range of site styles at retrokat.com. I charge $45/hr for design work and $25/hr for internet tuition. A small, simple site something like this one could cost as little as $1000. Email me on kat@retrokat.com to discuss your own personal requirements.
